What illnesses can asbestos cause?
Asbestos is a carcinogen (cancer causing substance) and inhalation of asbestos fibres can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis (scarring of the lungs).
There is usually a long latency period between initial exposure and the onset of symptoms, ranging from 15 to 40 years.
Asbestos-related conditions have a devastating effect on people’s health and are often fatal, as treatments are largely ineffective.
