In Victoria, the manufacture, storage, sale, transport, use and import of dangerous goods are governed by a series of Acts, Regulations and Codes, depending on their class and usage.
Dangerous Goods Act 1985 (DG Act)
The Dangerous Goods Act 1985 sets out the general duties for the manufacture, storage, transport, transfer, sale and use of dangerous goods and the importation of explosives into Victoria. The Act also enables regulations to be made about dangerous goods.
Road Transport (Dangerous Goods) Act 1995
The Road Transport (Dangerous Goods) Act 1995 regulates the transport of dangerous goods by road in order to promote public safety and protect property and environment.
Dangerous Goods Regulations
The Regulations set out specific duties for people who manufacture, import, supply, store, handle or transport dangerous goods. These regulations and codes are administered by WorkSafe Victoria. Regulations governing dangerous goods in Victoria are:
- Dangerous Goods (Storage and Handling) Regulations 2000
- Dangerous Goods (Explosives) Regulations 2000
- Dangerous Goods (High Consequence Dangerous Goods) Regulations 2005
- Road Transport Reform (Dangerous Goods) Regulations 1997
- Dangerous Goods (Transport by Rail) Regulations 1998
