What are community services?
The community services sector covers a wide range of non-government, not-for-profit organisations that rely on high levels of volunteerism and provide a multitude of welfare services, including:
- childcare
- disability
- domestic violence
- drug and alcohol
- education (neighbourhood houses providing adult training or childcare)
- emergency relief (including financial counselling)
- family support
- housing and homelessness support
- legal support
- mental health
- multicultural (including migrant resource centres)
- youth
Community sector organisations range from small, informal community groups through to large organisations, often complementing government services in health, education, employment and welfare.
