About the sector

What are community services?

The community services sector covers a wide range of non-government, not-for-profit organisations that rely on high levels of volunteerism and provide a multitude of welfare services, including:

  • childcare
  • disability
  • domestic violence
  • drug and alcohol
  • education (neighbourhood houses providing adult training or childcare)
  • emergency relief (including financial counselling)
  • family support
  • housing and homelessness support
  • legal support
  • mental health
  • multicultural (including migrant resource centres)
  • youth

Community sector organisations range from small, informal community groups through to large organisations, often complementing government services in health, education, employment and welfare.
