Other WorkSafe Guidance on design

WorkSafe has previously developed industry-specific guidance documents which focus on or include detailed parameters for design, taking into account specific hazards including manual handling.

Health Industry

Designing workplaces for safer handling of patients/residents

Developed by WorkSafe Victoria with stakeholders who reresent the health industry and its employees.
It provides guidance on the types of issues to be taken into account when designing health care facilities and takes into account & no-lifting principles and practices which are now common throughout this industry.

Transferring people safely - A practical guide to managing risk

Sets out the current state of knowledge in the health industry about the risks related to patient/client handling and how to control risk

Orthopaedic Surgical Instrument Sets - Reducing Risks of Musculoskeletal Disorders

Addresses the issue of equipment and health care facility design, and handling methods for large and heavy instrument trays.

Related Health Guidance

Design for Health - Workplace Design

The National Design 4 Health campaign focused on helping hospitals and aged care facilities to better manage manual handling risks in the workplace. The campaign report assists in designing healthcare workplaces to reduce the risk of manual handling-related injuries.

Transport and warehousing industries

Safety By Design

Provides examples of design problems and solutions in the transport industry, including aspects of building and structure design

Forklift Safety - Reducing the Risk - Forklift Instability

These publications have some specific guidance on design of buildings and structures to address risks in forklift operations.

In addition it is known that where forklifts are to be used, specification of the design of the appropriate Floor Flatness (FL) and Floor Levelness (FL) is essential to enable safe use of this equipment without risk of overturning under load (Link).

Forklift Stability and Other Technical Issues

Result of a study funded by WorkSafe Victoria and carried out by the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC).
It provides both design and more general guidance. Some of the information in it may not be current and may not fulfil the requirements of ensuring safe design or safe systems of forklift operations.
