Preventing occupational violence in the health industry

WorkSafe Victoria held a seminar on occupational violence in the health industry in early 2003. While the seminar focused on the health sector, the material presented is relevant to other industries where the hazard of occupational violence exists.

The following papers were presented:

Preventing violence against health workers
Dr Claire Mayhew's paper provided an overview on what is known about the hazard of occupational violence including the circumstances in which it is likely to occur. The paper also detailed some of the higher order controls that can be used to eliminate or reduce the risks of occupational violence.

Prevention of occupational violence - environmental design
David Caple's presentation provided practical case study examples of using environmental design to eliminate or reduce the risk of occupational violence.

Occupational health and safety - legal obligations of healthcare providers
This presentation given by Ben Burke focused on the broad legal context in which the health industry operates.

Occupational health and safety - interaction with privacy legislation
Bob Milstein's paper looked at the way in which privacy legislation health and safety law.
