Fix
Work through the following list to control dangerous goods risks. In many instances, a combination of approaches will result in the best solution.
1. Eliminate the risk
The best option is to eliminate the risk completely, so you should always try to do this first.
Example: Use water-based paints rather than solvent-based paints.
2. Substitute, reduce the quantity, isolate or use engineering controls
If you can’t eliminate the risk, think about changing the dangerous goods used or the way they are used.
Example: Use a less dangerous propellant in aerosols, such as carbon dioxide (class 2.2) instead of unodorised LPG (class 2.1).
3. Use administrative controls or provide personal protective equipment
If no other measures will totally solve the problem, use administrative controls or personal protective equipment to reduce the risk.
Example: Reduce the number of workers in the dangerous goods work area and use job rotation to limit exposure.
