HSR Support Program
Research shows that when employees have input into health and safety, workplaces have better health and safety outcomes.
WorkSafe’s HSR Support Program aims to improve employee representation by increasing the number of Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) in Victorian workplaces. It also aims to support HSRs to build their knowledge and skills.
The HSR Support Program does this by funding unions to engage HSR Support Officers to work in specific industry sectors which have been identified by WorkSafe as priority areas for the next two years
HSR Support Officers work in their industry sectors to:
- promote employee representation within the industry sectors targeted by WorkSafe to encourage the establishment of designated work groups (DWGs) with elected HSRs;
- promote WorkSafe approved HSR initial and refresher training and increase attendance at such training;
- support HSRs to link in with other HSRs within targeted sectors to increase HSR capabilities, support them in their role, share solutions and information and build peer support;
- promote consultation between employers and employees on OHS matters;
- provide expertise to assist HSRs to resolve issues at the workplace; and
- increase the knowledge and skills of HSRs to help address hazards and negotiate and participate in consultative mechanisms at their workplaces.
Support Officers do not perform the activities of an HSR and are not roving or itinerant representatives.
